The Tattoo Process: Step-by-Step Guide Explained
When it comes to tattooing, transparency isn’t just good practice—it’s essential, especially when it involves your skin, health, and healing.
Every client has the right to know exactly what is being used during a tattoo session. This guide breaks down each stage of the process, from skin preparation through to aftercare, including the products used and why they matter.
Process
- Shave
- Disinfect
- Stencil solution and paper application
- Tattoo glide
- Tattoo soap
- Aftercare cream
_______________
1. Prepping the Skin: Shaving the Area
The first step before any tattoo begins is preparing the skin, which includes removing any hair from the area.
This is done using a disposable, single-use razor. The goal isn’t a close shave—it’s to create a clean, even surface so the stencil applies properly and the needle can work without obstruction.
Even fine hair can:
- Interfere with stencil placement
- Trap excess ink
- Affect line precision
Using a fresh razor every time ensures hygiene and removes any risk of cross-contamination between clients.
_______________
2. Disinfecting the Area
Once the skin is shaved, it is fully disinfected to reduce any bacteria or surface contaminants.
This is a two-step process:
- Light application of isopropyl alcohol
- Thorough wipe-down using Dettol Original Liquid Antiseptic Disinfectant for First Aid
This ensures the skin is clean, stable, and ready for tattooing.
Disinfection is a key safety step that protects both skin integrity and healing outcomes
_______________
3. Stencil Application
Once the skin is clean and dry, the stencil is applied. This is the design blueprint for the tattoo.
I use Yayo Candy Stencil Solution to transfer the design onto the skin, along with thermal stencil paper for accuracy and clarity.
This stage is carefully controlled:
- The stencil is positioned and checked for alignment
- It is allowed to fully dry before any tattooing begins
Rushing this step can lead to smudging or distortion, so drying time is essential.
The stencil acts as a guide for placement, flow, and precision throughout the tattoo.
_______________
4. Tattoo Glide
Once tattooing begins, a glide is used to help the needle move smoothly across the skin.
I use Inkeeze Green Glide, which:
- Reduces friction during tattooing
- Helps keep the skin hydrated
- Minimises redness and irritation
- Allows clean wiping without damaging the stencil
It also contains skin-friendly, vegan ingredients designed for comfort during longer sessions.
_______________
5. Tattoo Soap
Throughout the session, the skin is regularly cleaned to remove excess ink and plasma.
I use Yayo Green Soap, which is:
- Gentle on skin
- Designed specifically for tattooing
- Vegan-friendly
- Available in light, pleasant scents
This keeps the area clean while ensuring visibility and precision during the tattoo process.
_______________
6. Aftercare Cream
Once the tattoo is finished, a light layer of aftercare cream is applied to support early healing.
I use Easy Tattoo (now rebranded as Otzi), which:
- Soothes freshly tattooed skin
- Provides a breathable moisture barrier
- Helps reduce irritation
- Supports early-stage healing
A free sachet is provided to take home so you can continue care immediately after your session.
